I've been photographing Hayden since he was six months old, and now he's two and constantly on the move. Somehow he manages to raise the cuteness factor every time I see him. I love to watch him grow. Here are a few from our session last month.

My Love

She started Kindergarten earlier this month and is already on her way to being a "big" girl. And though every parent feels this way about his or her child, I just have to say what an honor it is to know her. She is loving, generous, and plain old fun to be around. These were taken in August during the last bit of summer, which started late around here. But at least it came.

I am hoping to post more sessions from the summer and can't believe that fall is here -- catching up is clearly not my strong suit at the moment!

X-Man Turns Two

Blog world, I'm not sure where the summer went, but I am still here. A very special little boy turns two this week, so I had to give him a shout-out. Xavier is so funny and sweet, and I think one of the smartest kids on the block. A little balloon action to start...

Okay, crazy story about the balloons. About two minutes after they were tied to his jeans, they came undone -- the balloons, not his jeans. They floated up into the trees beyond reach. I kid you not, here are the pictures to prove it.

And here is where the story gets crazier. Dad, determined to get them back, goes to his car to get an UMBRELLA to attempt to hook the strings by throwing it up into the trees. I wish I had captured him doing that, but I had zero faith (like, are you off your rocker? There's no way in H-E-double hockey sticks you are going to get those down). We couldn't believe our eyes. It freckin' worked. Two of them popped, but he did it!

I've been on a bit of a little boy streak lately and loving every moment, I must say. This is Xander, who hit his six-month mark not long ago, along with his doting parents. What I loved about this session was the adoring interaction between them, knowing that this is how they must be when nobody else is around. Not even the photographer. Into the moment, into their lives.

When the Sun Came Out

There have been maybe a handful of days this month when the sun decided to make an appearance, and we were lucky enough to have Cole's session on one of those. Of course, it started to rain towards the end, but we didn't complain. Cole just passed his big first birthday, and he is ALL boy. He kind of had me from the start with just his name, which has always been a favorite of mine... not to mention, he's about as photogenic as they come.

Although I love color portraits, I really like this next series in black and white. This goes to show that it's not always about looking at the camera. The emotion and sweetness is what gives a picture that little somethin'.

Thanks, gorgeous Cole and family. You guys were awesome. Now, if we could just bring on some more sunny days!

Teddy | Six Months

Just a bit behind on blogging lately but wanted to share this little guy with you. Six months is such a wonderful age because most babies are so smily (especially after nap time) and perfectly into their parents because they can't walk or run away from them just yet!

Love those huge brown eyes.

This one gets me, especially because of the way he is looking at his mama. It makes me chuckle.

Thanks to Teddy and his cute parents for a great time. I always enjoy hanging with their family and look forward to watching Mr. T grow!

Mommy-Daughter Love

My sweet client Mona wanted to get some Spring pictures taken with her mini-me around Mother's Day. They make quite a pair as you can see, and little Miss S... Oh, how I adore thee. We had so many ideas. She was practically directing me during the session -- and I followed happily.

All photos were taken in their amazing little cottage home with white walls and floors to reflect the light, even on a dreary day. It's a dream and always my pleasure to work with them. Happy Mother's Day, every day!

Sweet Paradise

It's been a while since we went on a real family vacation -- the kind with sandy beaches and palm trees. It was really good to us! We hung with longtime friends, we walked, we chilled. Here's a quick glimpse, and for any photo enthusiasts out there, I decided to pack a bit lighter. All shots (with the exception of one) were taken with my Rebel XTi and 50 mm 1.4 lens.

There's something about one-year-old baby boys... I don't know if it's the age, their personality, or the fact that they love to explore. I'm sold on whatever it is. What got me the most was the way this little man, Jacob, looked at his parents -- like he just knew how much they love him. And boy, did they. His parents wanted to capture the special milestone, and here he is in all his cuteness. (Mom and Dad, too.)

We hit the streets of Seattle for this extended family session a few weeks ago. I can't say enough about these people. Funny, sweet, kind. Thi (pictured below) reminds me of my sister from another mister. She lives out of state and wanted to get the family together for photos as she didn't know when everyone would be together like this again.

2010 Faves | A New Year

As I sit here staring into 2011, looking back on my first year of business, two words come to mind: wow and thanks. wow, this photography thing wasn't so easy at first. wow, I kinda suck at the technical stuff but maybe my "creative side" will save me. wow, I really did it. It didn't matter how much money I would make or how busy I'd be, I did something outside of my mommy duties that made me feel useful again, the way I felt when I first graduated from college. A purpose whaa? And a deep thanks... to the peeps, family, God, and clients who had a semblance of faith when I wasn't so sure.

So here are just a few of my personal faves that I didn't get around to posting. Some aren't necessarily ones that would make it onto the mantel or Grandma's wall. They're the ones that make me grin a little; sigh inside. They evoke something in me that makes what I do all the more challenging and keeps me searching. You know what they say about a picture. It's true.

A Beautiful Day

There's nothing quite like those crisp, cold days when the sun is shining, and you get to spend the afternoon with a family like this. They're amazing inside and out. These twin beauties are four and ready to take on the world.

Mom and Dad, as you can see, are gentle on the eyes and dressed for success. J. Crew called and they want their ad back... hallelujah!

Off for a little hot chocolate and java to warm the hands...

We ended the day with these. I'm so glad we got a few of just Mr. & Mrs. to remind them that there is a "them" even with little ones. I think we all forget sometimes.

I've been in a good but slightly overwhelmed state with the holidays (I see nodding heads) and can hardly wait for the next two weeks to spend with the family. I hope to do a 2010 highlight/recap of some awesome clients soon. Wishing everyone out there a safe and blessed holiday season! xoxo

Birthday Bubba

I first photographed Hayden when he was six months old. He just had his first birthday, and I didn't think it was possible he could get any cuter. He's so full of personality and energy that by the end of the session, my face hurt from all the smiling. Hayden's parents are in for it as he just might (will) break some hearts one day.

New Ornament Cards

Honestly, I am not one to get holiday cards done this early, but I made an exception this year when I saw ornament cards making their debut. These are available at Tiny Prints, and they offer a nice new spin on the traditional photo card. Hopefully I will be receiving a few of these from friends myself. Such a cute idea.

Here are some of the other pics my husband and I liked - including outtakes - that didn't make the final cut, but ones that we'll be happy to have in years to come. Like all other parents, taking pictures of my own kids is NOT always easy. I take 50 snaps to get "one." They whine. They do the fake smile. And I will have to pay them soon. Just get out there and do it... because it's them, and they're yours (at least until they're 18).

Sibling Love

Meet Katie and Joe... I have to say that as far as repeat clients go, these two come pretty close to topping my list. They're funny, sweet, and playful. They do not *appear* to fight like normal brothers and sisters. And they actually listen and do what is asked of them! Simply adorable. Can't ask for more than that.

After a few shots outside their lovely home, we went to play for a bit at Ravenna Park:

Final stop: Peaks Frozen Custard on 65th. Their mom said it was deelish, and she was right. We left as some very satisfied customers (myself included).

An Afternoon At Carkeek

Meet Sarah and Kevin, planning to exchange vows in the 808 (yeah, Hawaii!) next February. I've known Sarah since she was in high school -- one of the coolest, most loving chicks I've ever met. We headed down to Lake Union for our session and couldn't have asked for a better day. They wanted something a little different, more urban, and here's what we got.

They have a beautiful baby boy... yes, people, SHE had a BABY. Nine months ago. I don't know whether to drool over her amazing bod or his adorable face. He has his mommy's dimples!

Seven

Seven years ago, we officially became parents -- we lost sleep, turned into full-time worry warts, and prepared for something you can't possibly be prepared for. All of the things other parents said were true. We fell in love indescribably. We cried and laughed harder than before. We wondered who he would be. Seven years from now, we’ll wish the first seven took more of their sweet time. Happy birthday to our little man Kai.

Beautiful Greyson

The smell and softness of a newborn is enough to make a grown man weak, and this little one was no exception. I couldn't even bear to use my sharpening tool on this guy -- his skin was that smooth and perfect. I was in baby love... I can only imagine how his parents must feel.

I wondered if he could sense I was there and got a little camera shy.

The waking-up process was fun to capture, as much as his mama and I tried to keep him in Dreamville.

And there was no going back!

His eyes were like marbles and so focused for being two weeks old.

Greyson, you are seriously too cute for your own good. Thank you for reminding me about the miracle of life -- and how quickly time can pass. I'm so grateful I got to stop it for just a moment. For you and your family.

From Hong Kong To Shanghai

My family and I just got back from a trip to China where we visit my parents every year. I spent eight years growing up in Hong Kong, and in many ways, it still feels like home. Now, before you think I'm crossing over into fashion photography, there was this stunning model standing in the middle of the street. Helloo. Wouldn't you whip out your camera, too?

A bit of local street fare and my personal favorites (sorry if the first one makes you gag) -- fishballs drenched in curry sauce, and fresh sugar cane that can either be munched on or made into juice. Mmm.

A typical Chinese delicatessen:

I naturally had to snap one of the kids posing under a gigantic Buzz Lightyear.

Moving on to Shanghai, one of China's largest, most Westernized cities. Population: 20 million. It has one of the most booming economies in the Far East according to my dad.

While the trip is usually one big food and shopping fest for us, the main reason for our visit to Shanghai was to see Expo. I remember going to Expo in Vancouver, BC more than 20 years ago. It was such a cool experience. Here inside the Chinese Pavilion, many of the local children displayed their artwork. I don't ever remember painting or drawing like this! I love the effort and attention to detail:

We were pretty lucky to be able to see the Italy and Germany pavilions as well. Masses of people stood in line for hours in the heat to get into some exhibits. A couple of abstract photos for fun...

Leaving Expo...

We had an awesome time and plan to check out Beijing and the Great Wall one of these days, maybe when the kids are older. I need to give a special shout-out to my husband who spends almost all of his vacation time making these trips possible. Until next year, China... zai jian!

Welcoming Charlotte

When I was recently asked to cover a baby shower, let's just say that my knee-jerk reaction was an absolute yes! Why? Details, details, details, because who doesn't appreciate those. Let's start with some food and favors...

Before I get too carried away, here is the guest of honor looking pretty fabulous at seven months, I think. Baby Charlotte got some good genes!

Must...have...mimosa. All except mama, of course.

This gal pictured next deserves a special mention because a) She is the dear friend of mama-to-be who helped mastermind the party details, b) Her smile says it all, and c) Her baby is The Gap's model of the month (okay, not really, but shouldn't he be?). And, the two ladies below are the BFFs' beautiful moms. Soon-to-be grandma on the right co-hosted and opened up her lovely home for this special day. Charlotte will be her first grandbaby!

Vintage Spring

It's been pretty blah here as far as the weather goes, but we seemed to luck out on Mother's Day. And the forecast looks promising for the rest of month (right, Seattle?). Bye-Bye Seattle, Hello Winslow

We took a little day trip/ferry ride to Bainbridge Island over the weekend, and it was a nice, quick escape from the city. We (okay I) especially loved perusing the quaint shops in Winslow. This one in particular, Hollydays, was right up my alley. You might also be a sucker for accessories and doodads -- especially when they're so adorable!

I wanted to give a special mention to Heather who was working there, for letting me snap away and for being one of the sweetest people EVER. She also made those lovely charms above. The wooden frames on the wall are made of old "junks" or boats from Hong Kong Harbor. Coolio!

Other yummy destinations included Mora Ice Cream and Blackbird Bakery (we went to both being the gluttons that we are). The kids had a blast, as did we.

Deliciously Kolo

While I don't offer albums at this time, here's where I might send a client or go to make a personal project. I'm digging the simplicity of these Kolo albums made from cloth and paper, although a few leather options are available. Lots of fresh styles to choose from. Affordable, too, so of course me likey! My faves are the Noci and the Vineyard. (I wish I could take credit for these cool product pics.)

The Madden Family

Almost Spring

Just a quickie here to celebrate springtime around the bend. Tulips are right up there with gerbera daisies on my favorite flower list, and why wouldn't they be? Simple and so, so pretty. They perched on our kitchen counter this lovely afternoon -- day threeish, still standing for now! If only they made up for the hay fever that plagues us this time every year...

Hands-On Fun

This week at I Heart Faces, the challenge is all about hands (whew!), and it's a borderline-strange coincidence that I'm doing a picture project for my son's school auction. The parents are supposed to guess which hands are their child's, and I snapped this one last week of Ana's holding the globe in class. As another mom put it, "She's got the whole world in her hands." I can just hear the song now... Anyhoo, each kiddo is supposed to express him or herself by doing something they like, represent, or are plain good at. This one's for Ana!

I like how these quick posts are making people join in the fun when they can. I'm starting to think I won't be blogging much about anything else! More hands here:

I Wanna Dance

I discovered a fun site called "I Heart Faces" and am a little giddy about being a new follower. It's aimed at all photographers -- well-seasoned or brand-new (anyone with a camera, really) -- and offers great tips, and holds weekly photo contests. This week's challenge is I Wanna Dance. I figured since I just posted about my baby girl's ballet class here, I would use this one instead. Perhaps this is more like upside-down dancing, but hopefully it still counts!

Kung Hei Fat Choi

Translation: Congratulations, and here's to prosperity! A little formal maybe, so for practical purposes, Kung Hei Fat Choi can pass for "Happy New Year" in Cantonese. The Lunar New Year is coming up; the Year of the Tiger. It's a celebration that spans several days and begins on the first day of the Chinese calendar. I really like the colors in this traditional silk shirt. Red brings luck. And lai see (red envelope) for the kids is usually filled with money -- bring it on!

Since it's also Valentine's Day, the kids got a double deal for their school party. Diversity at its best. No uniforms either... who doesn't love free dress day?

The classroom felt so fun and festive. I had to appreciate this hanging mobile made out of paper clips, rubber bands, and straws:

All That Dance

I was looking forward to my daughter's dance class this week because we were allowed to bring our cameras inside for performance day. Every Monday, I get to come and enjoy the fun and marvel at the bubbliness of all her ballerina mates through the sheer drapes. This time it's the inside of the studio -- yay! The class is appropriately called "Creative 3's," although this window of art was created by some of the older kids.

A few of the girls, including mine, may be on the timid side until after their warm-up; others are plain witty, but the best part is they're able to express themselves through body and movement. The word 'cute' doesn't even begin to describe them, though maybe this could apply to anything small that fits into pink tights and tutus. To top things off, her teacher has the perfect English accent and sounds like a modern-day Mary Poppins.

I was so impressed by this little lady's form -- not that I would really know -- but it looks spot on, doesn't it?

Two Weeks Old

Introducing Clara Isabelle, exactly two weeks old here. She was so peaceful, not to mention sweet and cooperative (sigh)...

Her daddy has brown eyes, mom's are blue. They look steel blue in this light, and while the color can often change in these early weeks, it looks like they might stay that way for awhile.

The next two crack me up, especially the bottom one because every time I look at it, it makes me yawn. Doh! Every time.

My Niece

Sweet Tooth

The only reason for the title of this post is because this girl has the sweetest expression and is also missing a tooth:

I will say though, that after an ambitious night of trick-or-treating, my son asked me about the "candy fairy" the next morning. Actually, his exact words were, "Mom, where's my gift from the Halloween fairy?" I thought to myself, he wants MORE treats? Then I figured there's a trade involved (think tooth fairy), which means he'd have to relinquish an entire bag of cavity-causing confections for a book or a transformer. Well, okay, not exactly. This mama is due next month but wouldn't mind being a couple weeks early. She's expecting another little girl. Can't wait to meet her.

Get a load of this sweet chick sporting the headband with style. Then again, she could've put a paper bag over her head with eyeholes cut out and made it look fashionable.

I also had fun with this little guy. Baby boy was incredibly easygoing at nine months. He sure loved his mommy.

And lollipops...

Big cuz had such a cute smile. I think it made his day when we said he could get in daddy's truck, and quite honestly, it made mine too.
